Dolls are just one of those things in life that give me the creeps, even now as an adult. I don't remember playing with them much when I was a child. I think I initially became traumatized by them as a middle schooler when we watched the movie Dolls at a birthday slumber party of mine. The few dolls I did have instantly became villains in my own bedroom after seeing that movie.
This is Cindy. My Grandma Burke had this doll in her home and would regularly change her clothes and stand her next to her lazy boy chair. I'm not sure why (because I don't remember giving her any attention growing up) but she gave me this doll before she passed away. Although honored to have received a prized possession of my grandmother's, she has always freaked me out. I think because she is life size and I'm a bit on the short side. This doll use to be the source of many screams when hiding her under beds and in closets during hide & go seek game with friends. Could you imagine hiding under the bed and looking into the eyes of what looks like a little girl?
My mom and sister recently gave Cindy a makeover because she has seen better days after at least 40 years. This is their attempt at making me bring her to SoCal (I made the mistake of saying I would some day when I have a daughter). The overalls she is wearing I actually bought for my niece Lindsey when she was three (she is now 13). Cindy still lives at my parents home where I hope she remains for the grandchildren to play with.
I was reminded of my fear of dolls today while shopping at the Long Beach Antique Market. There were creepy scary dolls everywhere. I couldn't resist snapping a few shots with my iPhone.
These must be Cindy's cousins. They look just like her.
A collection of the dolls from the market today...
If not to prove my point a bit further, how creepy are these?
I'm hoping that Brooklyn doesn't like dolls.
